Even more photos from Colorado Rare Mileage Trips

Monte Vista, Colorado

Sunday, October 29, 2006

On Sunday, October 29, 2006, we operated an excursion over the San Luis Central between Sugar Junction, the connection with the San Luis & Rio Grande, and the end of the line at Center, Colorado. The SLC was originally built to haul sugar beets to a sugar factory near Monte Vista, but today hauls mainly potatoes and general vegetables.

Our first runby of the day was on the bridge over the Rio Grande del Norte - the Rio Grande River.

San Luis Central #70, an SW-8, smokes it up some for photos...

...and no one from the photo line fell in the river!

The open-window car was chilly, but the sun was warm.

At Center, our train did some switching and picked up empty tank car GATX 37244 for the return trip.

SLC #70 is getting ready to put our train back together as cameras click and passengers investigate the nearby convenience store on this cold morning.

On the return leg, we again stopped at the Rio Grande River for photos.

Two runbys later, we headed on south to Sugar Junction and ended our weekend of Colorado train trips.
